An SAABC affiliate event with CCICE (Chamber of Commerce International Consortium For Entrepreneurs)
SAABC subscribers enjoyed an entertaining and fascinating evening with Silicon Valley legend Guy Kawasaki who rocketed to fame in the late 90s as Apple’s first “business evangelist”.
Today, as founder and CEO of Garage Technology Ventures, Guy invests in entrepreneurial teams with big ideas and guides them on bringing great innovations to market.
He shared his wisdom and perspective on influencing what people will do, while maintaining the highest standards of ethics. This is the topic of his new book “The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds and Actions” where he motivates entrepreneurs to get creative and enchant partners, customers, clients, teams and more.
The evening was a rare opportunity to hear Guy speak along with Jenn Lim, Chief Happiness Officer for Delivering Happiness & Zappos, and Kate Bennett Eriksson, Head of AT&T Innovation Centre for Ericsson, demonstrating how enchantment works in real time.
We learnt how to launch, overcome resistance, make enchantment endure, and how to use technology. Guy described how to enchant your employees and your boss. Finally, because there are times you may want to resist enchantment, he shared his wisdom on how to do this.
Chamber of Commerce International Consortium For Entrepreneurs (CCICE)—an organization that helps members build, develop, encourage, and support entrepreneurship in a cross cultural technology centric environment.

SA Venture Capitalist speaks on the “Good, Bad and Opportunity in SA tech innovation”
September 7, 2010 – Palo Alto – 6PM
The 2010 World Cup is over but the world’s eye on Africa is not! And perhaps it’s just begun considering the flurry of business news coverage of the continent such as: “The world is now taking notice that in the coming decades, Africa is poised to take the centre stage in terms of economic growth and infrastructural development, providing investment opportunities for world governments and international business. It is now common knowledge that modern day investors from across the world are seeking to do business with Africa.” from American Chronicle
In 2008 Africa’s collective GDP was $1.6 trillion –roughly equal to Brazil’s or Russia’s. According to a Mc Kinsey report, that will be $2.6 trillion by 2020. They predict that the continent’s consumer spending will grow from $860 billion to $1.4 trillion, in 2020 128 million African households will have discretionary income, 50% of Africans will be living in cities, and in 2040 1.1 billion African will be of working age.
Andrea gave an on-the-ground perspective of innovation and opportunity in today’s South Africa relating the current layout of venture capital and investment climate and activity in the technology industry.
Some articles to whet your appetite on Andrea’s presentation topic:
The New Africa: A Frontier of Innovation, Technology and Sustainability
“Africa is fast emerging as a global trend-setter in social innovation and sustainability. While cynical western observers have often depicted what they deem “the dark continent” in negative light, Africa has proven skeptics wrong by turning its fortunes around amid adversity to present opportunities in virtually all sectors of development, be it technology, education, manufacturing, real estate development, media, arts, agriculture, transportation, telecommunications etc. The world is now taking notice that in the coming decades, Africa is poised to take the centre stage in terms of economic growth and infrastructural development, providing investment opportunities for world governments and international business. It is now common knowledge that modern day investors from across the world are seeking to do business with Africa.” From American Chronicle READ MORE
Rebooting innovation in South Africa
“South Africa has great strength in the diversity of its people. The depth of this diversity provides exciting and challenging possibilities to create a great incubator of social capital, innovation and entrepreneurism.
South Africa needs entrepreneurs to create new jobs and to ensure that South Africa leads the continent, if not the world, in creating the technology that will affect all of us in the 21st century. Innovation and entrepreneurship are about self-determination. A successful entrepreneur literally creates his or her own future. South Africa is characterised by this trait: it is a country that succeeded in creating a new future from the ashes of Apartheid.
Now, it is time to do that again. South Africa does not need to wait for innovation developed elsewhere – the right dynamism, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit are all right there.” From Memeburn READ MORE

“Can you buy a green card?” … and enjoy a taste of SA wine
Thursday June 17, 2010 6:00 PM PST Palo Alto – Silicon Valley, California
Private jets, family cars and green cards? What do they have in common? You can get them all if you have money. Leading US Immigration attorney & EB5 expert explained fast track to US residency … as we enjoyed locally available South African wines.
Two nationally recognized authorities discussed the “regional center EB-5 program” that enables investors to get green cards without starting a business or even being employed. The immigrant investor, or EB5, program is one of the most expeditious options for attaining permanent US residence. There is no quota waiting list and a shorter process overall. Invest in a commercial enterprise that will employ US workers and you are on your way – if you have critical documentation in place.
They explained U.S. immigration options for entrepreneurs and business owners and how many investors and entrepreneurs have obtained U.S. permanent residence for themselves and for family members overseas.
Guest speakers Ron Klasko and Tammy Fox-Isicoff are two of the country’s leading lawyers representing investors in EB-5 cases and treaty investor (E-2) visas. They shared the many geographical, financial, employment and corporate requirements of this much sought after option for obtaining a U.S. green card. They also discussed alternative immigration options for South African entrepreneurs and investors.
Thank you to Peter Smith of Smith Wines who shared an array of delicious South African wines on the local market … particularly the delicious Slanghoek Pinotage!!
