NOT-FOR-PROFIT:  Hope in SA
Help overcome poverty through education in South Africa

a

Founded in early 2007, HOPE in SA started as a movement by Dr. Cyril Wolf to give back to the country that gave him so much.

Since it's founding, HOPE in SA has received donations from all over the world, including many from people who have never lived in South Africa, but who are interested in helping.

SAABC spoke with Hope in SA founder Dr. Wolf about the organization, it's mission, and how we might all support their success.

Who benefits and what is their challenge?
Children without the where withall to live normal lives specifically as regards their food and education. Their challenge is to overcome the poverty in which, through no fault of their own, they find themselves.

Their stories are heartbreaking. Some get up at 4:00am and walk 10 miles through neighborhoods filled with criminals and drug dealers, praying they will not get attacked or raped. Some lost one or both parents, or were being brought up by grandmothers employed as domestic servants.

There are many of us expats and most of us have done well, thanks to the education given to us by South Africa. If we all gave $10 a month we could make a significant difference in these kids’ lives.

What is your mission?
To raise donations for the education and well-being of underprivileged children in SA. With the specific proviso that 100% of funds raised go to the target with nothing taken for 'expenses'.

Projects we support are evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Project must have considerable impact on surrounding community.
  • Majority of funds must be directed towards the project being funded (goal is 95%+)
  • Beneficiary must possess a passionate, committed leadership team.
  • Where possible, Hope in SA will give priority to initiatives with minimal access to alternative funding.

What is a current relevant South African project?
The building of a children's  library in the rural area of Caguba to serve 2000 kids from 9 schools none of which have library facilities. The library is almost completed.

How can people support?
Donations can be made by check or by credit card, the details of which are on the website. Registered 501(c) 3 non-profit organization.

HOPE in SA's premise is that a relatively small donation - $10 a month – can have a large impact on a country where severe poverty is still prevalent and where the HIV/AIDS epidemic has devastated millions. Many people each donating $10 per month can become something significant!

Where do people go to get financial information on your organization?
Financial information will be available on request and will consist of all bank records.
